Chapter 9

“What’d you find?” Tony asked as I climbed down.

“Some sort of book or journal was hidden in this old tin box.” When I finally made it to the ground, I dusted my pants off, opened the book, and looked at what I’d found. “It’s a book of drawings. It looks like the drawings were created by a child.” There was a drawing of the house in the background, a blue car, a black dog, and a cloud-filled sky on the first page. I handed the book to Tony.

“It looks like one of the prior residents left this behind,” Tony said. “Based on the quality of the drawings, I’m going to say that a child did these.”

“Maybe we should take it with us,” I suggested. “If whichever child left it in the treehouse hasn’t come back for it by now, I doubt they will. It may have belonged to one of the Dogwood children, and if it did, there could be clues inside.”

“It may have belonged to a resident before the Dogwoods moved in,” Tony pointed out.

“It may have, but if we study the drawings, maybe we can figure it out. Let’s take it home and look through it.”

Tony looked skeptical, but he eventually agreed that we could go ahead and bring it with us. Since the book had been wrapped in a cloth and placed in a metal tin, it had withstood years of weather better than you would think it might have. If the book had been owned by one of the Dogwood children, and we had no way of knowing at this point whether it had or not, then maybe whoever had saved their secrets in the pages of the book had captured a scene that might give us a better perspective on exactly what went on in the days leading up to the disappearance of the artist’s mother.

“So what now?” Tony asked after he checked out the barn and returned to the truck. He looked toward the house. “I know we came to look around inside the house, but it looks like a strong wind might blow the whole thing over.”

“Yeah. The house doesn’t look safe. I guess you didn’t find anything in the barn.”

“The barn looks as if it’s currently being used at times by the new owner. There wasn’t any livestock in residence today, but I could see that the place has been maintained. I don’t think we’ll find clues from a sixty-year-old mystery in the barn.”

“Since the house isn’t being used and hasn’t been for quite some time, I wonder why the new owner hasn’t simply torn it down. I realize we’re pretty far off the beaten path, but it seems that an abandoned house, even if it is located on private land currently used for grazing, is still an invitation for a child or transient to spend time inside.”

“It does seem that the house presents a potential liability.”

“I guess let’s skip the house and head back toward town,” I suggested. “I’m going to call Bella and see if she has time to answer a few questions.
